40,000 species go extinct every year

Species extinction is progressing at alarming rates. 200 million years ago only 1 species went extinct in 1000 years.
This changed to 1 species going extinct every 100 years, and in 1975 alone 1000 species went extinct.
Now 40,000 go extinct in a single year. Anguilla japonica, better known as Nihon Unagi, may also go extinct in the near future.
